Chapter Four

“Omigod! Omigod!”

The high-pitched wail floated down the hallway as Micah led Shauna out of the third-floor stairwell, the cries almost enough to ready his body for lovemaking again. Except, the voice was not Shauna’s, it was not crying out in ecstasy, and after the deliciousness that had just transpired between them he’d never want another woman ever again. Their bodies had molded together in a perfect fit, two halves finally making a whole. Sooner or later he’d find the opportunity and words to tell her how he felt. For now he was good with seeing the satisfaction in her face and with them moving together like they were floating above the ground.

“Omigod, omigod, you two!” Lauren exclaimed in a wobbly stance outside her and Shauna’s room. Mascara smeared the eyes that were now wide open. “Where’ve you been?”

Micah said nothing. This was Shauna’s call—her bachelorette party, her body, her secret to reveal.

Ryder pushed the door open. “Here I was, trying to be all quiet,” he aimed at Shauna, “so I didn’t wake you.”

“Thanks.” She made a casual tug at her scooped neckline. “We’ve been…downstairs. In the lobby. Catching up.”

What Micah would give to drape a possessive arm around Shauna’s mostly bare shoulder and let loose a full-wattage smile. He wanted them—hell, he wanted the world—to know he was in this with her, long and deep. Instead, he bit the inside of his mouth and nodded. Like, Yeah, that.

Lauren’s brow furrowed. “Where in the lobby?”

“On a couch,” Shauna answered vaguely. The L-shaped room had dozens.

“We probably walked right by you guys on our way to the elevator,” Ryder said, pushing open the door then leaning back against it to let the ladies pass.

“Either that or you’re freaking lying!” Lauren crowed. “And you’ve been off screwing each other’s brains out!” Throwing her head back with a laugh, she staggered into the room. “Oh, imagine if you guys got married! We’d be family as well as best friends!”

Shauna followed, disturbingly silent. But only because of her determination to keep Lauren’s bachelorette weekend perfect, right? She didn’t want to rock any boats or be found guilty of taking attention off the bride-to-be, Micah was sure. It couldn’t be more than that. It couldn’t.

“I was telling her about my work…and my interviews,” he said, trailing Shauna into the room. Because if she wasn’t going to deliver some kind of comeback, somebody had at least better change the subject. And because he’d certainly intended to tell her about those things, had just gotten continually sidetracked by far more interesting subjects and luscious body parts. But over the past few days he’d passed the first two of three Calico Flats High School interviews to coach their soccer team, which sounded like a perfect fit for him, even if it meant three periods a day teaching freshman history.

The timing was amazing. Almost…meant-to-be. The family ranch was in the black, he’d gotten tired of the cold winters, and more than anything Calico Flats had been on his mind,
